The Mathematics of Planet Earth

Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 (MPE2013) is a world-wide initiative that will highlight the contributions made by mathematics in tackling global problems, including natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis; climate change; sustainability; and pandemics. MPE2013 partners will sponsor workshops, research conferences, public lectures, outreach events, and educational opportunities for all ages. You can read more at Mathematics of Planet Earth.

The CRM, a collaborating institute, started the program with the organization, earlier this year, of the Research program on the Mathematics of Biodiversity, which took place from June 18 to July 20. The program included the Exploratory Conference on the Mathematics of Biodiversity, which took place from July 2 to 6.

 The CRM will also organize the following activities during 2013:

El Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM, http://www.crm.cat) lanza una convocatoria para captar estudiantes de doctorado o becarios postdoctorales que quieran incorporarse en alguno de los grupos de investigación del CRM (ver listado). Los candidatos seleccionados se incluirán en las propuestas de investigación de aquellas agencias externas de financiación que inviten al CRM a participar.

Programa de visitas de investigación para estudiantes

El CRM cuenta con una convocatoria permanente para estudiantes que puedan realizar visitas de investigación en el centro.

El objetivo del programa de visitas de investigación para estudiantes consiste en atraer el interés de estudiantes jóvenes hacia la investigación en las Matemáticas.

En el marco de este programa, el CRM acogerá, para períodos de entre 2 y 4 meses, entre septiembre y julio (dentro del curso académico), a estudiantes jóvenes de grado o de máster para desarrollar una etapa formativa en alguno de los grupos de investigación de CRM, y de forma eventual llegar a completar un trabajo de iniciación en la investigación. Preferentemente, los candidatos tendrán que haber completado el 3r curso de un grado en el ámbito de las matemáticas o la física o estar cursando un máster en el mismo ámbito.

Tenure Track Position in Scientific Computing

Job description
We are looking for a research scientist in scientific computing, with an expertise in modelling of physical, chemical or engineering problems on a micro- to mesoscopic scale, with time dependent partial differential equations and/or Monte Carlo methods. You should bring a strong expertise in computational methods, and be interested to contribute to research on sustainable energy supply which is now one of the five strategic themes at CWI and a top sector in Dutch science policy.

You will become member of the Multiscale Dynamics group who presently mostly focuses on modelling plasmas in thunderstorm related discharges as well as in high voltage engineering and applied nonequilibrium plasma physics, with some of these topics relevant to energy research. You will interact with the group on computational issues, and you can either join our plasma research or develop your own application field. This will also depend on the funding that can be found.
CWI presently has four research groups in the field of scientific computing, with a strong track record in atmospheric electricity and circulation, life sciences, plasma technology, fluid dynamics in the context of windmills and aviation, financial mathematics and image reconstruction.

Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics

We are looking for a highly motivated statistician with leadership skills or potential to join the expanding UKCRC-registered Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit (PCTU), located in the Centre for Primary Care and Public Health and linked with the Centre for Psychiatry. The PCTU supports high quality clinical trials and pilot studies that fit with the research strategies of these two Centres and also carries out methodological work related to trials. You will be joining a team of nine statisticians currently working within the PCTU on a variety of pragmatic trials and observational studies, many involving complex interventions.

This purpose of this post is to contribute to the work of the Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit in leading, supporting and encouraging high quality research. The post will involve taking responsibility for all statistical aspects of major trials and other studies contributing to design and oversight of analysis, including liaising with other chief investigators and other researchers within and outside the Centre for Primary Care and Public Health as required. Duties & Responsibilities: In addition to participating in support of four NIH and VA center grants and multiple NIH R01 and VA Merit Award grants, the selected candidate will be expected to conduct independent methodological research in these areas of investigation and to participate in teaching in the graduate program. The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health has six divisions with 48 full-time faculty members. The department is ranked first in NIH funding among departments of its type in public schools of medicine and second among all medical school departments of its type. Its grant portfolio also is ranked second in the School of Medicine, behind the research intensive Department of Medicine. This position will be housed in the EPH Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, which serves as the primary source of biostatistics expertise and collaboration at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Duties & Responsibilities: Associate to Full Research Professorial Position with responsibilities at The Biostatistics Center and in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Position involves: serving as Co-Investigator or Principal Investigator (Project Director) providing direction in the design, conduct, and analysis of multi-center collaborative studies; conducting methodological research to meet project needs; and engaging in academic commitments such as advising students and teaching. We are seeking an individual who wants to join a highly competent team of academic biostatisticians and epidemiologists, desires to contribute to the design and analysis of major medical studies, seeks substantive scientific and statistical responsibility, enjoys interacting with medical investigators, takes pride in participating in the publication of major papers in leading medical journals, desires to make an impact on issues important to the public health, and is confident communicating in both writing and orally. Postdoctoral Fellow. New York University School of Medicine

Duties & Responsibilities: The Postdoctoral Fellow will engage in methodology developments in survival analysis and high-dimensional data analysis, with the application focus on building and evaluating cancer risk prediction models. The Fellow will have opportunities in participating large collaborative epidemiology projects.

Senior SAS Programmer

Duties & Responsibilities: • Familiarity with pharmacological industry studies and clinical trials from phase 1 through phase 3 • At least 5 years experience as SAS programmer in the pharmaceutical/biotech and/or CRO industry • Proficiency in SAS programming with excellent knowledge of SAS 9.2 environment and Windows operating systems (familiarity with other operating systems an environments, e.g., UNIX, is a plus) • Proficiency in the use of basic and advanced SAS tools and procedures such as SAS BASE, SAS/STAT, SAS/MACRO, PROC REPORT TABULATE, ODS and additional statistical procedures, and functions. • Good organizational skill and ability to fulfill management tasks • Capability to write programming specifications for analysis files based on statistical analysis plans • Experience in multiple aspects of clinical data processing, including the analysis of efficacy and safety data based on the methodology described in the statistical analysis plan. • Capability and work experience to generate descriptive and statistical summaries • Experience in designing and preparing programs to produce tables and listings, and figures for presentation and regulatory submissions based on statistical analysis plans • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously • Good oral and written communication skills • Capability to work in a team as well as the ability to solve problems independently. • Collaborate with members of statistics, data management, clinical and regulatory teams on preparation of summary documents submitted to study sponsors and regulatory agencies. • Participate in analysis planning activities in order to meet study objectives in compliance with regulatory requirements. • Review case report forms to ensure that protocol objectives are met and project standards are maintained. • Participate in data reviews during study conduct. • Participate in the design and implementation of integrated analyses of multiple databases. • Provide SAS training to members of the science and statistics teams as required.

Biostatistician:Master's Level. University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS)

Duties & Responsibilities: The department is expecting one open position for a Master’s level Biostatistician and application review will start immediately upon approval. The Biostatistician is responsible for providing statistical expertise in the design, evaluation, and analysis of research studies as well as in the presentation and publication of research findings. This position assists investigators with designing research databases and in writing analytic plans, independently answers research questions through valid statistical analysis and interpretation of results and assists investigators in writing statistical methods in research manuscripts. The Biostatistician participates in the publication and/or presentation of research findings, participates in the development or evaluation of new or modified statistical procedures and applications, and participates in the development and delivery of statistical education seminars/short courses as well as other service activities as required by the Director.

Duties & Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for teaching 9 hours per week (in English) as well as administrative duties, as assigned.
