PhD Positions in Bioinformatics | Grenoble University | Grenoble, France

Our CEA laboratory is involved in cancer fight through the identification of key genes acting in the oncogenic process. To that end our laboratory has developed an original RNAi-based screening approach using cell microarrays. Briefly, it consists in high throughput and high content screening on microarrays, of the phenotypic consequences of gene or microRNA depletion at single cell level. After analysis, this leads to a list of genes / microRNAs implicated in the phenotype of interest (such as cell death of prostate cancer cells).

MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNAs (around 20 bases) which are important gene regulators in cells (human, animals, plants, etc.). Discovered in the 90s, more than a thousand human microRNAs are now known (1872 in miRBase, 2013). However, their functions remain largely unknown. The goal of the proposed PhD thesis is to investigate the role of microRNAs with a system biology approach, in particular in the case of prostate cancer. The PhD student will use in-house high content screening data, and available data bases (data mining). It will also benefit from the ongoing PhD thesis in the laboratory on microRNA networks (R software, graph theory).

Research Assistant in Epidemiology and Statistics | Imperial College London

This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher with an MSc or equivalent in statistics, epidemiology or a related quantitative subject to join the research team at the national MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health (http://www.environment-health.ac.uk/). A key part of this post is to be involved in the launch of an exciting new research study to set up a secondary school cohort of mobile phone use and neurocognitive and behavioural outcomes. The study is based at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics within the School of Public Health at Imperial College. The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics has attracted an excellent multi-disciplinary team interfacing across epidemiology, database programming, geographical information systems, and statistical methodology.

The project
The Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (ALSWH) examines the health and well-being of over 50,000 women in four age cohorts (born in 1921-26, 1946-51, 1973-78 and 1989-95). Since 1996, ALSWH surveys have assessed participants’ physical and mental health and well-being as well as their use of health services and medications. ALSWH is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and is conducted jointly by staff at the University of Queensland and the University of Newcastle. At the University of Queensland, the Study is located in the School of Population Health at the Herston campus.

The role
ALSWH is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Biostatistician to conduct statistical analyses for ALSWH scientific publications and presentations, Government reports and grant applications. This is an outstanding opportunity for two ambitious individuals to work in an area of advanced statistical research that will have the potential to directly impact practice in clinical diagnostics. These positions present a unique setting to work with analytical chemists pioneering the use of nano-particle assemblies in clinical diagnostics and with the clinicians who wish to translate this research into clinical practice.

Our challenge at Warwick is to develop the essential novel statistical methods to:
(1) solve the inverse problem of frequency spectra deconvolution, when all that is available is the contaminated and mixed frequency response from a nanoparticle assembly that has bound to an unknown number of biomarkers.
(2) To provide probabilistic assessments that will support clinical reasoning and decision making by the integration of diverse sources of evidence, in the form of measured biomarkers and clinical indicators, in probabilistically assessing the likelihood of disease states of an individual patient.
